Dear Omis as Teenager: I want to play older heroors often

I can not see them anymore, the same, young hero * inside or gray-melted, experienced men à la Joel Miller, Nathan Drake, Kratos, Geralt and Co. to me as a player in the middle of thirty is barely in the AAA area Something showed what I do not know anyway - and that annoys me. I wish more old heroines in games, because they have the potential for me to finally convey new impressions.

It's not about representation

That may sound strange now, but I'm not about representing at all. This is basically and of course very important for many reasons, but in this case my very personal need for old heroines has other, selfish reasons. I want to collect new player experiences and do not experience told stories yet. The classic hero * internal travel and self-filling trips Young protagonist * inside I have seen and read, if not played in all, then at least in more than enough variations.

Also old women have exciting stories to tell: Aged women offer exactly as good storytelling options as their male counterparts. Nevertheless, there are significantly more playable men as women, which is confirmed by an evaluation of Feminist Frequency: 2020 stood 18% female characters 23% male - the remaining 59% are attributable to non-binary and gender-independent choices, eg. B. by character editors.

The years before, female characters did not even come to the two-digit area. Let's take a look at the age of these few heroines, quickly crystallizes that there is a strong age quantity. The legitimate praise that returns the return with its protagonist Selene as an exceptional example confirms this circumstance.

Thus, as a player who likes to develop empathize, and would like to get to know new perspectives, hardly any such offer. There are some minor characters and companions in the upscale age, such as Maria in the Last of US 2, Wynne in Dragon Age: Origins or Eydis, the head of the barracks in Assassin's Creed Valhalla. But this can hardly be awarded as much story as a playable main character whose narration is the center of the respective game.

Grannies are almost only in Indie games

In the indie area has already been experimented more than the big development studios. But here too, a little has to be sought to hit really old women. A few examples that go in the right direction, but I have found:

In the short art game The Graveyard you control a morness, which only goes through a cemetery with your sock, puts on a bench, rushing to a song that goes back to a song ... and that can die again at any time. The horror match The Cat Lady allows you to find out the disturbing story of a convincing protagonist mid 40, trying to finish with all the pain and sadness in your life - and completely cliché.

Note: The Cat Lady deals with topics such as suicide and depression. The game contains various potential triggers for people who have to fight themselves with traumata.

Mostly I am looking forward to the two not yet published games Lake and Blueberry. Adventure Lake is about the almost 40-year-old programmer Meredith Weiss, which draws back to her little hometown for two weeks, in which she has to work out many of her past and much new. While Lake is more of a feel good game with an interesting protagonist, the Storylasty Platformer Blueberry deals with serious, family topics and trauma processing. It illuminates the entire life of a woman, from the first childhood reminder, until death.

These are just a handful of examples. Even with these, there are only a few protagonists in the middle age or whose counted years are at all beyond the 40.

Michael Beck @Bossinsky Michael finds most AAA stories quite transparent. Because he wants to experience other stories and new experiences, he has been comforting for a long time with indie-games. Although old heroines are still too few, but significantly more than in the mainstream.

Limitless possibilities by fiction

Action, Omi! There would be more development studios that would take on the interests of older generations could also be told more diverse stories. Why not more old action women as playable characters? Everything is possible in digital worlds. A high age of the character does not constitute a restriction, but offers the opportunity for a background story, which also fits an elegant woman. The options are limitless, provided someone accepts the matter.

I know everything already

In video games, I'm not just looking for escapism, but also to new experiences. Young hero * inside and old gentlemen I have played more than enough, old women hardly accept me. Are you playable, like Mom in Back 4 Blood or Helen Dashwood in Watch Dogs Legion, your stories are usually in the background. Therefore, I think that there is a lot of new things to tell here.

I'm pretty sure that not only I need the need for previously unknown stories instead of the thousands of coming-of-aging or bromoce story. Of course, that does not mean that every protagonist has to be an old woman. There is more than enough space for everyone. Anyway, I am looking forward to many more old heroines.
